Spring 2010

Prairie Moon Waldorf School faculty are offering a 6-week session of enrichment classes, including Art and Spacial Dynamics, for first through sixth graders beginning on March 5th.

Description of Art Class:

Mr. Kris Carlson will lead the children in age-appropriate techniques in drawing and painting.  Your child will experience wet-on-wet painting, veil painting, and draw with colored pencils and beeswax crayons.
Stories weave the child’s imagination with their soulful experience to create on paper a visual interpretation.

More about the painting experience:
Your child will have a peaceful, meditative discovery of the medium of wet-on-wet painting.  The classes will include stories to enrich the child’s intuitive understanding of the life of colors.  As an example, yellow is light like a firefly and knows no boundaries.  Yellow’s joyful social interaction with other friends (colors) creates harmonious transformations in both itself and the new friends.  As older children become more aware of forms in the world around them they will welcome the teacher’s assistance in clarifying these images in their paintings and drawings.  Here is where art and science begin to compliment each other.

Veil painting is a technique that allows the light to shine through as in a stained-glass window. This medium connects the child to the social interactions of the colors in a more profound manner.  The colors maintain their identity while interacting with each other.  This method can represent a parallel to the child’s unfolding social experience.
The beauty of this holistic approach to art is that the student discovers for his/herself that form arises from the color.

Description of Spacial Dynamics Class:

Megan Corcoran will lead an upper and a lower elementary Spacial Dynamics class.  Spacial Dynamics is a growing body of spatially oriented movement exercises, activities, and games, as well as a unique method of therapeutic movement work, developed by Jaimen McMillan, founder of the Spacial Dynamics Institute, www.spacialdynamicsinstitute.org and Hands In Peace, www.handsinpeace.org.

Jaimen McMillian’s nearly 30 years of intensive study, teaching, and therapeutic work in the United States and Europe has informed his innovative perspective of the moving body and its orientation in space. He has created and adopted an eclectic array of movement opportunities that bring consciousness to not only one’s physical movement, but also to the spatial relationships in one’s surroundings.

Spacial Dynamics is the foundation for movement education programs in Waldorf schools across the world. Megan Corcoran is the Spacial Dynamics teacher at the Prairie Moon Waldorf School in Lawrence, Kansas.
